Customer Reviews
Great value
Great value laptop. Same spec's as ones that are a few hundreds of dollars more. Works well, straight out of the box. No prob's. Great little size. Fantastic screen -- much better than the bright shiny screen that is on my 1-yr-old Acer 15". And screen not too small. (I was worried that a 12" might be too small and thus hard on the old eyes, but it's fine.) My only niggle = cosmetic: the 9-cell battery it came with is better than a 6-cell battery, so i'm glad I got it for performance reaons. But it sticks out beyond the back of the laptop by half an inch, so it doesn't fit the pretty, floral 13" foam laptop sleeve I also bought. So i have had to use the boring old 15" black sleeve. :-( It doesn't play some of the kids' newer game CD-ROMs, (coz the video card is not 'advanced' enough for that) but I did that on purpose! It's great - it keeps them off my computer. It is an excellent work laptop, for all office functions, plus Dragon Dictation. If you don't need the game card, then no need to pay $1700 for the Sony equivalent. At $964, this is definitely best value laptop for the spec's that I've seen.
Buyer Beware!
I recently purchased an Acer TravelMate with high expectations. A similar Acer TravelMate model had recently received an excellent rating in PC World and on other sites that I checked out. After receiving the laptop, I went to work setting it up. In the course of setting it up I was asked to enter and re-enter a password at various times, which is the standard drill with a new computer. Well, imagine my surprise and horror when I went to log back in, only to find out that I was locked out. Well, I called Acer and explained what happened and was told I needed to call a "PAY for service" password support number. I asked why I needed to pay for support on a brand new laptop and was told that is what I needed to do if I wanted to get my laptop working. When I called the password support number, that person told me told me that she couldn't help me and I needed to call Acer back and get them to help me restore the factory settings. When I called Acer back they told me my BIOS password needed to be reset and that it would cost $99 to fix, and I had to send my laptop back at my expense. I explained that this scenario was just wrong, as I had followed the instructions on the system to the letter, I had used my standard password so I knew it was right, and I was still under warrantee, so I shouldn't be charged. That person said that this was my only option. After that, I started to do some web searches ref. Acer BIOS password reset and found numerous sites with people reporting the same exact problem. I then called Acer Corporate Customer Service and explained what had happened to me and what I had found on the Web and that person was just flat out rude, saying what I had what told him was impossible and that the claims on the web were exaggerated. All I can say now is "Buyer Beware". I would stay clear of Acer!
