The Samsung GX-1L digital SLR was designed with entry-level DSLR users in mind. It features a host of automatic functions including Auto Sensitivity, Auto Picture Mode, and a newly designed operation system. This, combined with its full range of advanced manual functions, make the GX-1L perfect for the beginning through advanced DSLR user.
For exceptional image quality and control, the GX-1L has a five-point, wide-area autofocus system, with a choice of AF-single or AF-continuous, providing accurate autofocusing in a variety of shooting conditions. The GX-1L also incorporates a high-precision, three-mode metering system including 16-segment multi-pattern metering, center-weighted metering, and spot metering. For additional control and creativity, users can choose from eight scene modes including Kids, Pets, Candlelight, Museum, Night Scene, Surf and Snow, Text, and Sunset, as well as several White Balance settings.
As with many high-end Samsung camera models, the GX-1L was developed for use with Schneider optics. The GX-1L uses the Schneider D-Xenon 18-55mm lens and will be available as a body only or bundled with the D-Xenon lens as a kit. For added convenience the GX-1L can be used with many Pentax DSLR lenses and KAF2 and KAF mount lenses.
Designed for easy use, the GX-1L includes a host of automatic operations including an innovative Auto Picture mode that automatically selects the appropriate picture mode from Standard, Landscape, Macro, or Action depending on the subject. When in Auto Sensitivity mode, the GX-1L automatically selects the camera's sensitivity including brightness and focal length to help reduce camera shake and ensure a steady, clear image. And, for easy selection, all major functions can be accessed from the large, easy-to-read mode dial.
The Samsung GX-1L includes a high-speed consecutive shooting mode of up to 2.8 frames per second for up to eight frames in JPEG shooting and up to five frames per second when shooting in RAW mode, allowing the user to capture a series of the subject's action or movement.
Designed to enable easy viewing of images in all lighting conditions, the GX 1L features a large, 2.5-inch LCD monitor (210,000 pixels) and a bright, high-magnification pentaprism viewfinder offering a 96-percent field view.
The GX-1L features a compact, lightweight body measuring just 4.9 x 3.6 x 2.6 inches and weighing 16 ounces--perfect for on-the-go shooting. The Samsung GX-1L can also be powered by four AA-size Lithium, Ni-MH, or CR-V3 batteries.

This is Samsung's version of the Pentax *ist DL.
It's worth looking for reviews on the *ist DL too, because it's the same camera. There are slight cosmetic differences, but nothing that affects the image quality, operation or accessories. It takes the same lenses. I've used the Pentax version and it is an excellent DSLR. It's one of the smallest available, which is very nice - especially if you use it with one of Pentax' pancake lenses, which are available at 21, 40 and 77mm focal lengths. With one of those mounted, it's scarcely bigger than a point&shoot. These cameras are much more comfortable to hold than the Canon Digital Rebel XT and XTi, which are other small-size SLRs.
If you're looking at this, you may also wish to look at Pentax' new 6 megapixel models, the K100D and K110D. The K110D is an upgrade to the *ist DL, while the K100D adds image stabilization. Both are pretty much the same body as the *ist DL and GX-1L, and the image processing has been improved in the opinion of many reviewers.

My first experience with SLRs was with the PENTAX Spotmatic and Kodachrome 64 in 1974. I still get a thrill from razor sharp colorful images but now I don't have to buy the prepaid mailers and wait a week for the slides to show up in the mailbox.
For me, having the latest technology takes a back seat to price and quality. This camera takes GREAT pictures and works with all my old K mount and screw mount lenses. Have you seen the asking prices on new lenses? Obscene! Take a look at my pictures using 40-year-old single focal length screw mount lenses on this Samsung body. Higher quality than any zoom!
I have a nifty Fuji S1000 for travel and people events. And now this GX-1L for scenic and studio. I have finally made the transition from film to digital. That is real picture progress!
SLR?
Dear Friends,
How can an SLR have a view screen view finder? When the reflex mirror is down no image can get to the detector. All the light is reflected off the mirror into the eye piece. Get it together before you write a review.
