Stay away!
I bought this computer in December of 2008 from Amazon, by March it was "acting up". It would shut off on it's own, no warning, plugged into the wall with a full battery and bloop! off. Turn it back on, last for a few minutes, do it again. Power on again, and shut off before it would finish the Windows load screen and not turn back on at all. I contacted Amazon who stated to contact Sony. It's been since March, calling Sony consistently, different numbers and the same thing, no one answers the phone. We got a response a few weeks back, told to try a few things and if they didn't work then it needed to be serviced. We did it, contacted them back and they never responded. I'm done with Sony. I will buy from Amazon again, and overall the computer is a very good computer. But if things go wrong, which they tend to then don't expect Sony Customer Service to be there for you. Go with HP or Apple, the prices are premium but they're good computers and great customer service. If you do buy this laptop, and fail to heed the warnings then you're risking your patience for a good priced, strong laptop.
Mixed bag
Good: Great monitor, good speed and generally great functioning.
Bad: Keyboard is HORRIBLE. It is "hard", has no "feel" to it and is stiff. The battery is in fact weak and if you have any chance to get a extra-life battery get one. The body is weak. It is not so much the plastic as it the construction. The top is weak. In order to open the top you must stick your fingers under the lip - somewhere - and pull up.
So as to not pull from one side or another you must lift the top from the center. But you cannot do this without placing your finger tip directly over the built in camera!!! How a design could require you to smudge your finger over the camera every single time just to open the laptop.
While the Good is good, the Bad is bad. I WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED THIS ITEM.
Sony VAIO
Bought new Sony VAIO for my wife to replace her existing Sony VAIO which we had for over 5 years. Great laptop for music, photos and general web browsing and other home tasks. Only drawback is they are on the bulky side when compared to other laptops. However, still can be used as a portable computer.
